Today in Clarksburg Ohio World War II history: Lt. Jack Morris flies mission on Berlin in 1944 and Liberated from Stalag Luft 7A in 1945!

April 29, 1943: Charlie Jobe and portions of the 82nd Airborne, sail from New York harbor for Casablanca. Herschel Bethel departs the U.S. for the European Theater.

April 29, 1944: Jack Morris (pictured) flies his 20th bombing mission to Berlin's Marshalling yards. Viciously attacked by German figthters and the co-pilot is severely wounded. Morris' B-24 limps back to base, but makes it.

April 29, 1945: Dwight Overly departs Fort McCllelan, Alabama for reassignment at Fort Meade, Maryland. Earl Reisinger departs Clarksburg following a 36-day furlough and returns to San Diego for reassignment. Jack Morris is liberated from Stalag Luft 7A in Moosburg, Germany. The POW's were liberated by the U.S. 3rd Army, including a personal appearance by General George Patton. Jack and the remainder of the POW's remained in Moosburg until May 8, 1945.

February 22: A big day for Clarksburg Ohio B-24 Liberator crew members during World War II

February 22, 1944: Lt. Jack Morris (392nd Bomb Group) writes to his parents while in a hospital recovering from fatigue and wounds received in his first crash of World War II - this time in England, the result of being shot up following a bombing mission. Morris does not elude to his wounds nor the crash he and his crew endured two days before on February 20 in his letter to his parents. Roy Hawkins departs the U.S. for the European Theater.

February 22, 1945: Don Adams flies his fifth B-24 bombing mission over Murnau, Germany with the 485th Bomb Group.

Tom Eycke sets sail for the Pacific Theater. Vernon Bethel transfers from Camp Forrest, Tennessee to Watersboro, South Carolina.

January 28, 1943: Harmon Jobe departs the U.S. for the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. Harry Holloway is based at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Editor's note: It is interesting to note that Fort Sill was named in honor of Brigadier General Joshua Sill, from Chillicothe, Ohio. On this same day, Jack Morris earns his wings as an aerial bombardier at Midland/Odessa Air Field, Texas, and is eventually assigned to the 392nd Bomb Group.

January 28, 1944: Don Maddux enlists in the U.S. Army. Earl Martin (pictured center with two friends) is participating in basic training at Great Lakes Naval Training Center, Illinois.

January 28, 1946: Morris Templin is discharged from the U.S. Army.

January 27, 1944: John Dawson From Sioux Falls, South Dakota, John Dawson writes Clarksburg High School Superintendent Pryor Timmons to update him on his flight school status. Disappointed, he explains to Mr. Timmons about an illness that forced him from flight school and into radio instruction.

January 27, 1945: Lt. Jack Morris of the 392nd Bomb Group (pictured left) and the remainder of the prisoners at Stalag Luft III in Sagan, Germany (Poland) begin their forced march ultimately to Stalag Luft VII in Moosburg, Germany due to the Russian's aggressive pressure on German forces along the Eastern front.

Carroll arrives North Africa with 6th Armored, Lt. Morris writes home from Stalag Luft 3

December 21, 1942: Marvin Carroll arrives North Africa attached to the 6th Armored Infantry of the 1st Armored Division.

December 21, 1944: Lt. Jack Morris writes to his parents from Stalag Luft 3 POW camp in Sagan, Poland (then Sagan, Germany) that his activities have been limited due to the snow storm and that he has been keeping busy by cutting the hair of other prisoners. Joe Kelly enlists in the U.S. Army at Fort Hayes, Ohio.

December 21, 1945: Carl Dinkler finally receives his discharge from the U.S. Army at McCloskey General Hospital, Temple, Texas and sent home following extensive surgery on his wounds received while fighting near Brest, France in the Fall of 1944. Dinkler was shot numerous times by a German sniper, while helping to retrieve bodies and rescue wounded soldiers from his unit stranded at the front.
